Classic early New York house jam mixed by Boyd Jarvis and Timmy Regisford. It's all about the dub version here, although both of the other mixes are good in their own right. This one has been turning up in some of the Ron Hardy mixes I've been listening to lately. It's surprisingly affordable on vinyl too, so there's really no reason not to own a copy!

This is without a doubt one of the most treasured artifacts in my collection, and I'm very pleased to be able to share it.

As the founder and operator of National Sound Corporation, Ron Murphy's role in shaping the sound of Detroit techno cannot be overstated. NSC mostly confined itself to mastering records for release on other labels, but Murphy also released a handful of records between 1998 and 2004 on his own label, NSC Records. The label's first release was a double pack pressed on gorgeous picture discs, featuring Detroit luminaries Anthony "Shake" Shakir, Underground Resistance, and Kevin Saunderson.

The Shake material, which comprises the entire first disc, is what makes this compilation essential. The highlight here is "NSC Tracker," a mesmerizing and utterly devastating feat of transcendent machine-soul. On the second disc, a rare and exclusive UR track and a vocal house jam by Kevin Saundeson round out the compilation. The Saunderson track is the only lackluster moment here, but given the other gems on offer, this is only a minor gripe.

One of Wolfgang Voigt's lesser-known projects, Freiland was analogous in many ways to Studio 1 - no artist or release information provided, just a color for each 12". Like Studio 1, Freiland showcases some of W. Voigt's most stripped-down minimal reductions. Voigt's Freiland tracks take just a few rhythmic and/or tonal elements and extend them, repeating them over and over with slight permutations. The results are rigid, somewhat austere tracks, which may not be as dense or absorbing as, say, GAS, but which work wonderfully as left-field DJ tools. I'm hoping to get some more releases from this series on vinyl soon, so I'll do some rips if/when that happens. In the meantime, you can stream them all at Kompakt.FM.

I'm not going to post full rips of Omar-S releases, in part because many of them have been posted elsewhere, but primarily because they're almost all available directly from Alex Smith himself -- and there's really no reason not to shell out $5 per 12" for some of the best productions around. However, I feel compelled to share a recent highlight from the second installation of his Side Trakz series. Also, if you ever have the chance to catch him live behind the decks, I strongly advise doing so. His recent set at Sunday Best was one of the highlights of their excellent series this summer.

Stunning material from the late James Stinson, with Sherard Ingram (AKA Urban Tribe) on the B-side. One of Stinson's last releases before his untimely death, "Sorrow and a Cup of Joe" is at once playful and melancholic - the work of a totally singular producer at the peak of his creativity. Ingram's contribution is somewhat more austere, but it's deep, immersive and compelling in its own right.

Reinhard Voigt's releases for Mille Plateaux feature hazy micro-loops which repeat over and over to mesmeric effect. Some of these tracks virtually sound like locked grooves. Others contain richly textured drones which pulse in and out of phase. And there are a few dreamy ambient techno arrangements on offer as well, particularly the final tracks on each album. Essential listening for fans of the Voigt brothers' pre-Kompakt material.

Jody "Fingers" Finch - Jack Your Big Booty (1987)

Several weeks ago I was browsing the ever-reliable shelves of the Port Chester Salvation Army, and I came across a nondescript-looking 12" on Tenya Records titled "Jack Your Big Booty." My interest was piqued, but I had no cash, so I left sans vinyl. Fast forward two days - I'm sitting at my laptop groggily reading this post at Infinitestatemachine, whereupon I discover that I had passed up a rare and notorious proto-ghetto-house banger that once graced the decks of none other than Ron Hardy. Needless to say, I jumped in my car, drove to the Salvo, and searched through every Barbara Streisand record on the shelves 'til I found it again. This one doesn't bear the Low Down Len signature Sharpie, but it's almost certainly from the LDL collection. Not a bad investment for $1. This release will be getting a long-overdue reissue this year on Let's Pet Puppies, featuring a new Derrick Carter remix.

Here's a vinyl rip. It's a 20-year-old record that was on a thrift store shelf without a cover - and it sounds like it. Don't mind the surface noise, just do what the song says.

In Search of Low Down Len

Lately I've been frequenting the Salvation Army in Port Chester, New York, a town in Westchester County near the SUNY Purchase campus, where a little-known 80's-90's Chicago DJ called "Low Down" Len Woolfolk evidently deposited all of his records at some point or another. Each visit seems to unearth more vinyl treasures with "Low Down Len Woolfolk" scrawled on the labels, ranging from Chi-town jack anthems from the likes of Marshall Jefferson and Chip E to raunchy ghetto tracks from Paul Johnson's group The Traxxmen.

Low Down Len seems to have hailed, not surprisingly, from Chicago and later matriculated at Jackson State University in Mississippi. A cursory Google search for "Low Down Len" turned up one relevant result, consisting of a former JSU student reminiscing about Woolfolk's proclivity for spontaneous public performances:

No matter how hot or late it was, "Low Down Len" from Chicago was known to plug his equipment up on the plaza, and within minutes, there would be thousands of students jammed in front of Alexander West Hall. All studying, TV viewing, and sleep would cease as multitudes would get dressed up to dance and socialize.

Unbeknownst to Woolfolk, his collection of Chicago house 12's has had something of a second life lately, as I've been playing many of them out at house parties on my college's campus. The response they've gotten hasn't exactly equalled the jack en masse described in the excerpt above, but they have been a real pleasure to spin, and uncovering them at the Salvo for $1 a pop has kept me coming back in search of Low Down Len.

Curiously, Len Woolfolk is credited alongside Kanye West as a producer on the Consequence album Don't Quit Your Day Job. This might just be a coincidence, but the ambiguity only adds to the Low Down Len mystique. God bless you, Len, wherever you are - if you're out there, please do a mix for the blog!

17-year-old Kyle Hall has been turning heads since 2007, when he made his debut on Omar-S' FXHE imprint. Just a year later he launched his own label, Wild Oats, and dropped the Worx of Art EP 1 to wide critical acclaim. The forthcoming Wild Oats release, The Perfekt Sin, finds Hall sharing the studio with an ensemble of collaborators collectively dubbed "BSMNT City Anymle Kontrol." The group delivers a jazzy, non-quantized live number that will keep your toes tapping, and Hall rounds out the EP with two more solo productions.
